I turned to the head maid, who stared at the floor, her heart pounding so loud I could hear it, just like Miranda’s.

“That’s practically the entire time we’ve been together,” I said, my voice shaking with disbelief. “But tell me, why? Why did you do it?”

She couldn’t answer. No wonder our marriage had felt so lifeless. She’d been pretending, pretending to love me until the moment we married, and then everything changed. For years, I thought it was my fault. I thought I wasn’t trying hard enough, that maybe I was still trapped by my past mistakes. But I was wrong.

“Why?! Answer me, damn it!” I roared, and she flinched, her tears falling, empty, unremorseful.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, shaking. “I didn’t know how to tell you.”

“Tell me what?” I snapped, my anger sharp enough to cut. “That you were sleeping with the head maid’s son?” I didn’t even recognize the woman in front of me anymore. “If you don’t start talking, I swear I’ll have that boy killed.”<
