When he straightened, his breathing was all uneven and ragged. It made me secretly happy—I could actually do that to him, the guy who always acted like nothing could touch him, like he was untouchable.
Well, Desmond, I’ve got you to thank for this, I thought. He let go of me right away and took a step back. I straightened too. He was looking like he’d just done something he shouldn’t and totally forbidden. To break the heavy air, I asked, “How’s Randy?”
Uh-oh, bad move—I realized it too late. “Why are you asking about Randy?” he shot back. Guess I didn’t switch topics like I thought. “Well, is there a reason I shouldn’t?” I said, trying to defend myself.
“So you’d rather him come to you than me?” He was being weird now, but I liked it. Oh, so he gets jealous fast. Now I’ve got that over him.
