Nate's POV

The assassin might have only come to attack Layla alone, but there were two assassins, and the only indication showed up when the other one was being chased. That only meant that the other one had been up to something.

Why exactly were they here, and who sent them? I thought as I stood around Nicholas, who was trying to figure out the components of the poison from Layla’s blood with the help of the healers.

“It is unlike any I have ever seen before,” Vera said. Layla’s eyes were shut tight, and she was barely breathing. One would think she would die any time soon, but I could feel that she was in there. What would happen if she were to die? I knew it would be meaningless, but what about Brian? The little boy is too young to be motherless, but then am I ready to part with Layla too?
