Nate's POV
The hospital room was awash with the sterile scent of disinfectant, a stark contrast to the tension thickening the air. I stood from the edge of the bed where Layla lay, her chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. Tubes and wires snaked from her body, connecting her to various machines that blinked and hummed in the dim light.
Valerie stood by the window, her silhouette a shadow against the pale moonlight filtering through the curtains. I glanced at her, my mind still reeling from the revelation she had just dropped on me. Lisa, Marcus’s wife, was my long-lost sister. The sister I had never known I had until now.
I saw that she had finished treating Layla so I grabbed her right hand and dragged her outside.
