Chapter 351
As Brody returned to his seat, Emmeline noticed several jurors exchanging glances. The younger woman who had been watching Richard earlier now studied Emmeline with increased interest.
“Thank you, counselors,” the chief judge said, making a brief note on her legal pad. “We’ll proceed with witness testimony. Prosecution, call your first witness.”
Yuna stood once more. “The prosecution calls Emmeline Maine to the stand.”
A jolt of surprise ran through Emmeline. She hadn’t expected to be called first by the prosecution. Her wide eyes sought Brody’s face.
“It’s a common tactic,” he whispered reassuringly. “They want to catch you off-guard. Remember your preparation. Short answers, no elaboration unless I indicate otherwise.”
Emmeline nodded weakly, her mouth suddenly dry as parchment.
