Chapter 14. Sacrifice

“When were you gonna tell me that you’re leaving?” I ask Rick.

We’re snuggled on the couch in his apartment in front of the TV. His favorite cooking show just ended, and I can’t keep putting off the conversation.

It’s been a week since I found out that he’s taking a new job, and he hasn’t even told me. As the week progressed, I moved from feeling hurt to being confused. Like, does he want to tell me just before he leaves? Will I get a call when he’s at the airport? Or does he just suck at goodbyes? We’ve been getting along too well for him to intentionally hurt me.

“Leaving?” he says, looking confused. “To go where?”

Unbelievable. Now, he’s gonna lie? “I saw the letter from Arkos Architects. I know they gave you a job.”

“You were snooping in my office?”
