Chapter 10
The fire was almost on him when a dark figure came out of nowhere.
A man crashed into Will from the side, and they both hit the ground. The fireball roared past them, close enough to scorch the leather at the man’s shoulder, then slammed into a tree. Bark exploded from the trunk, and flames immediately began climbing the wood.
Shouts broke out across the training field. Someone yelled for water as several warriors rushed toward the burning tree.
I barely noticed.
I reached Will seconds later and dropped to my knees on the packed dirt, gravel biting through my skirt.
“Will!”
“I’m okay.”
I grabbed his face between my hands and checked him anyway. His cheeks, his hair, his arms were all covered in dust and dirt, but there was no blister, nothing. Not a single burn.
I pulled him against me so hard he made a small protesting sound.
“Mom. I said I’m okay.”
“I know.”
My hands were still shaking,
