I was already bracing myself for the worst. Instead, Cordelia slid a contract across the desk toward me, the pages crisp, clearly printed fresh that morning.

"We've updated your contract. A few clauses have been changed. Aidan contacted me and asked that they take effect immediately."

I stared at the papers without touching them yet. "What changes?"

"Your salary is twice what we originally offered."

My eyes widened. "Twice?"

"Yes. As for the rest, you'll read it yourself." She pushed the contract the last few inches toward me, and I glanced sideways at Seraphina, hoping to gauge her reaction. Her expression told me she hadn't known about any of this either — a flicker of surprise crossing her face before she smoothed it away.
