“I’m sorry,” she said, breaking the silence at last.
He took a seat in a nearby armchair and picked up the newspaper on her bedside table.
“Did you get any sleep last night?” he asked, ignoring her apology.
She was right. They couldn’t do this here. Maybe they never could. He didn’t want to hear I’m sorry, didn’t want to talk about the devastating ache in his chest. It was six months too late for I’m sorrys and I still want yous. He had Emily now and Keira had a country to think of. They were just both in vulnerable states. The day was getting away from him. He was tired.
“Not much. The nightmares never really went away this time. The Archduchess of Imperium can’t afford to be heard screaming her lungs out in company,” she answered, watching him closely as he picked up a pen and folded the newspaper back on itself.
