Chapter 56
Shantelle’s POV
“Why would I do that?” Papa turned, and I realized I couldn’t get any of them to talk to me.
This was getting harder than I thought. Maybe it was time to let it go. They wouldn’t speak to me about all of this, and I was tired of being kept in the dark. This wasn’t going to help me get the truth from my parents or Reginald. I was so sure he knew what was going on.
“I need to know why I am being asked not to go to school.” This was the only thing I could do now—insist that I wanted to know the reason and see how it played out. Being in the dark wasn’t my favorite place to be, and there was nothing I could do to change that.
“Shantelle, don’t question your papa,” Mama finally said something.
I turned to look at her. She wasn’t very good at keeping quiet, but she had done that now. Maybe she wanted to say something that would interest me. I knew it was patronizing, but it wouldn’t be that bad if I wasn’t too eager to be in school.
