Bernard knew that his mother would still bring up her issue, but he had been hoping she would let it go.

"Marissa…Your wife? How is she doing? When was the last time you saw her?" His mother repeated.

Bernard picked up his cold soft drink to wet his suddenly parched throat. That croissant seemed to be extra dry and crispy. Yes, that was the only reason for the tightness and dryness in his throat.

"She is fine. We saw each other last week," he replied reluctantly, knowing that his mother would not let go of the issue until she got what she wanted.

"Look at him saying it as if that is a normal circumstance for any newlywed," Helen thought.

"Really? You saw each other last week?"

"Yeeeees, mom," Bernard said in exasperation. He wished she would drop it.

"So, how are things between you two now?" Helen asked with her two elbows on the table, supporting her chin.

"Fine, momma. Just fine," Bernard said curtly, concentrating hard on h
