Chapter 45
The sheriff was already moving toward the back of his truck, and I followed him. I heard the passenger door open and then close.
“The rangers are on reserve at this time and are short-staffed, but I have already contacted them,” he commented, and stopped while searching among a pile of keys for the ones used to open the doors of the cargo compartment of his vehicle. Still searching through his keychain, he added, “Have you had an accident, Mrs. Greyson? It has a broken window upstairs.”
I turned slightly toward the house, on instinct, thinking quickly. Very observant. A lot. That was good police work. With all the scandal, the wolves still hadn’t fixed anything.
“My friends have a boy, and he was playing baseball in the room,” I lied, with surprising ease. “I’ll call the hardware store later and they’ll send me someone, it’s okay.”
I don’t know if I should feel bad for lying to a police officer or not, despite the situation, but—
