Leaving Phoenix behind felt wrong, but he assured me that Gretchen would take good care of him. I know taking advice from a four-year-old is absurd, but with his ability to see into others’ minds and catch glimpses of the future, I have no choice but to trust them both. The road that runs between the Ruby and Obsidian Packs is long and travels through neutral territory. It is only called neutral because that sounds nicer than rogue camps. These stretches of road are lawless, and they don’t care about pack rules or politics. While most are smart enough not to bother an Alpha’s caravan, there are the select few who are only looking for a fight.
