Martina stood frozen, guilt and confusion washing over her. She wanted to explain, to make him understand, but Ares didn’t give her the chance. “You don’t owe me an explanation,” he said coldly, taking a long sip of the whiskey. His back was to her, but his voice dripped with bitterness. “You married Antonio. I don’t need to hear your excuses.”
“Ares, please,” Martina pleaded, her voice thick with emotion. “I do owe you an explanation. I thought you were dead. I didn’t know what else to do.”
Ares let out a bitter chuckle, the sound devoid of any humor. He turned around to face her, his eyes dark with anger. “So, the first person you thought of was Antonio?” he said, his voice harsh. “You let him kiss you. You looked at him the way you used to look at me. And now, you expect me to believe that nothing happened between you two?”
