Chapter 282. An Angel
Lara watches them with a mix of relief and sadness, marveling at their resilience but mourning the fact that they have to be so strong at such a young age.
“Why are they acting like nothing happened,” she asks Carter quietly as they stand in the kitchen, observing the boys from afar.
“They’re tough kids,” Carter replies, stirring a pot on the stove. The savory smell of stew fills the room, comforting and familiar. “But they shouldn’t have to be.”
Lara nods, her eyes misting over. “I think it’s better if they stay with you for a while,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll come and visit as often as I can, but I think they’ll feel safer here with you.”
Carter pauses, turning to face her fully. He searches her eyes, understanding the weight of her decision. “I was thinking the same thing,” he admits. “If you’re okay with it, then that’s what we’ll do.”
