Chapter 65. Hidden Truths
Alfred excused himself from Eliza and went to sit next to Serena. He thought of inviting Eliza to join him but gave up when he remembered that he had observed with a bad feeling that Eliza did not greet her father or look her mother's way. If it was her will, she would join them willingly.
While the four concubines danced merrily around the two brothers, Alfred initiated a conversation he considered necessary with Serena.
"Is there a doctor treating you? Are you being properly attended to?"
Serena became visibly nervous and began to clench her hands in her handkerchief, which did not go unnoticed by Alfred.
"Yes. My husband, Don John, has hired another doctor. His name is Piter. He is very good to me..."
