Margaret stood up as well, her voice growing desperate. “We’re so sorry. Please, Elena. For Damian’s sake. For our grandchildren.”
“Your grandchildren have had enough without you,” Elena replied sharply, pointing at the door. “And now, I’m asking you to leave before I lose my temper completely.”
Margaret looked like she wanted to say something more, but Charles tugged on her arm. “Come on, Margaret. We’d better go.”
They stepped outside, leaving behind the scent of expensive perfume and memories that were never pleasant.
Elena sat back down, taking a deep breath. The waiter came over, asking if she needed more coffee.
“One more,” she replied lightly.
Elena refocused on the agenda. The encounter with the past was just a reminder of one thing: her worth was not negotiable. Not anymore.
“They’re so shameless! Begging me to come back! I will never, ever go back to Damian!”
