Chapter 13
Gage’s POV
I take down the plate number and leave the muzzled guard to his job. “Thank you, Gerald.” I give him a pat on the shoulder, stunning him even more as to how I knew his name. Observation is a key core of our training in the FBI, and I now do it as a second nature, without even realizing some of the things I do can be downright creepy.
My plan from here is to go straight to the DMV to get full confirmation on the owner of the car or its most recent rental if it isn’t her, but when I remember that I left Scarlett in the house and have been gone for quite a while, I have to postpone the trip.
The investigation can wait another night. Besides, it’s not like I have an early enough lead. I’m not chasing her; I’m looking for her.
When I arrive at the safe house, though, towards dinner time, my head feels hot enough to explode when I see the mess the house is in.
“Oh, you’re here. Sorry, I made a bit of a mess.” The culprit smiles sweetly like
