Chapter 18
Scarlett’s POV
He can’t hold the chuckle that escapes his lips, and I follow with a ghostly smile. At least my terror provides him entertainment. There are two reasons I’m really uncomfortable. The first is the obvious fear of embarrassment that is impending with each step we take toward the exquisite counter.
I could live on the counter!
The second reason for my discomfort stems from how poorly dressed I am. A hooded sweatshirt that is comfortable but really ugly and matching sweatpants with casual sneakers. Everyone else is wearing a suit.
Including Gage! A three-piece suit!
I feel so out of place, but there’s no time for me to think about that. The march to the counter is onward, and with the growing feeling of inferiority, I find myself sinking further into Gage. I feel his hands move and instantly regret being so close to him, feeling like he’s going to seal the deal of embarrassment for me and push me away, no matter how slightly.
