Mom’s car is inaudible the moment it pulls out of the driveway. Feet shuffling, voices raising in disorderly patterns, bodies slamming—at different velocities—into one another buries the almost silent call of the engine.
Yay! I’m alone again at Glenlane High!
I trudge my way past the entrance, my head bent low as always. There’s some gathering to a side, and by the time I get near, I’m staring at a scene that’s making me close to doubting my desire to climb to the top.
His blonde hair covering what must be a husk of skin on his neck, Eduardo looks down at a student, holding his neck with his right hand.
I can’t hear what he’s saying to him, but I can see the grin on his face as he leaps in my direction at one point. I get bored of staring and continue the walk that seems to have no end toward my class.
