Chapter 20. The Pain Building Inside Her

Mika sat on her office chair and looked incredulously at her phone. Sam's ex-girlfriend Mary's text message hit him like a blow in the belly. It said, "Had a great time last night." Mika's mind was spinning with inquiries. That was confusing. Did Sam and Mary spend yesterday night together? Were they getting back together? The possibilities made Mika nauseous as they whirled about in her mind.

She had been with Sam for almost a year now. They met at a mutual friend's party and hit it off immediately. They had been inseparable ever since. Mika had never been happier in a relationship. She trusted Sam completely, or so she thought. But now, after receiving this text message, doubts began to creep in.

Mika felt a lump form in her throat as she tried to hold back tears. She had been cheated on before in a past relationship, and the pain and hurt still lingered. The fear of being betrayed again was almost too much to bear.
