Adam could sense the disappointment and frustration in Bonita’s voice. He knew she was trying to be understanding, but he sensed that his rejection hurt her. He didn’t want to see her sad or upset, but he couldn’t change how he felt.
“Bonita, I appreciate your willingness to do something for the family, but I don’t want you to sacrifice your happiness for that,” Adam said gently, holding her hand. “I care about you deeply, but as a sister. I want you to find someone who will truly love and cherish you as you deserve.”
Bonita looked down at their intertwined hands, her heart feeling heavy. She knew Adam was right, and she couldn’t force him to have feelings for her that he didn’t. But it didn’t make the pain any less accurate.
