Having finally managed to find a peaceful sleep, Tom was abruptly awakened by a voice shouting in his dream. He got up, pulled the window curtain aside, and saw a gathering of people outside.
“Anne? Anne?” Tom called out.
Hurried footsteps were outside the door, followed by the door swinging open. “Master, is something the matter?”
“Where’s Mrs. Mirabel? And what’s all this commotion outside?” Tom’s voice carried a hint of annoyance.
Still groggy from his disrupted sleep and frustrated by the intrusion, his mood wasn’t pleasant.
“Master, Mrs. Mirabel left early this morning. There are many reporters gathered outside Kenneth Manor. It seems to be related to the delayed engagement of the young master. I told them the young master wasn’t home, but they didn’t believe me and refused to leave.” Anne spoke calmly. She was the nanny of Mrs. Mirabel’s household and had been with the Kenneth family for over twenty years.
