While it’s true what Emory says about us wanting a beach day, there is another reason why we’re in Cerise Port. My uncle is one of the few people whose opinion I value. His experience and wisdom as a ruler cannot be discounted. When I first ascended to the throne, his guidance had been invaluable.

Emory has gone into the water with the boys, still keeping near the shore as she and Cole’s governess Sarah assist the boys as they try to swim. Helga and Nellie are nearby on the shore, setting up a tent and table for food and drinks. Lex is helping them set up the tent. Uncle Cyrus and I walk along the shore so we can have privacy as we talk.

“What’s bothering you, nephew?” he asks.

“We have a problem. My brother-in-law’s mate was taken by the Blood Takers,” I explain to him.

“Are you sure?” He raises an eyebrow at me.

I nod. “We found her car near Red River. Lex talked to King Matthias and pretty much confirmed that the Blood Tak
