As I glanced around the apartment unit we were in, I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to feel.
Should I be bothered by the mess? Or disgusted by the state of things? It was hard to tell.
The whole place was in chaos—cigarette butts littered the small coffee table and were scattered on the floor. Empty alcohol bottles lay around, with some still half-full, the liquid slowly dripping onto the grimy tiles. Plates with dried food sat untouched, as if they’d been left there since yesterday, the sauce clinging stubbornly to the surfaces, hardened by neglect, with bits of rice crusted into the edges.
