Maddie stood by the car, her body trembling as Nate slammed the door shut. She glanced at Vanessa’s retreating figure and felt a pang of guilt mixed with anger. It was true that she had made mistakes, but did that mean she deserved this level of cruelty? 

Nate’s eyes softened as he looked at her through the car window. He opened the door again and stepped out, walking over to her. “Maddie, get in. We will figure this out.” 

She hesitated, her mind swirling with doubts. “Nate, maybe Vanessa is right, you know? Maybe I don’t belong here. Maybe I should pay and just…” 

“No.” His voice was firm, cutting through her thoughts. “Don’t let her words get to your head. We are going to figure everything out and it’s all going to be just fine, trust me.” He wished that he believed this but it seemed only like a dream for now.
