“What you’re missing, Gwen, is that Steve respects your father. He honors him like a son would. Ted could take a club to Steve and he’d never lift a hand to protect himself, especially if he felt that he deserved it. His love and respect for you makes him love your family and respect your father. Of course the way you and your sisters keep kissing him and rubbing up against him helps a little, I’m sure.”

“I guess I have to get my head around the fact that Steve is so nervous about Dad. He keeps telling me that he is, yet I’m always surprised at how serious he is about it. It tells me that Steve would make a pretty good father himself. How many kids do you want?”

“That is not even going to be discussed right now! After medical school, you can give us as many grandbabies as you want, but don’t even think about it before then, young lady!” warned Paula as Gwen laughed.

Steve and Gwen sat together at the piano as their turn to perform approached. Steve had been very im
