By morning, half of Black Hollow wanted Mara protected and the other half wanted her sent as far away as possible. I understood both positions. I also wanted Lucien Cross to stop smiling whenever she entered a room, which had nothing to do with the safety of the north and was therefore a thought I kept to myself.
Maeve was finishing the bandage around my side when Lucien asked whether I had slept.
“I was attacked in an archive at midnight.”
“So better than Ironwood.”
“Marginally.”
Mara came in with a dispatch in her hand and snow melting in the loose strands of her hair. Lucien’s attention went to her at once. She had the look of a woman who had already chosen a course and was prepared to let the rest of us catch up.
“No,” I said.
