Chapter 99. Daddy... You Came?

Author’s POV

Kai’s eyelids fluttered open a little at this point and he let out a weak murmur, “Daddy? You came?” His eyes looked full of astonishment and he forced a smile.

Jake’s heart shattered at the sound, and he fought back tears. “Yes, buddy, I’m here. Daddy’s here.” But then Kai’s eyes closed again, and his body went limp in Rosa’s arms. Jake screamed in agony, “No! Please, Rosa, let my son go!”

Rosa’s face crumpled with fear and confusion. “I don’t want to hurt him,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

“Then don’t,” the officer said, his voice firm but gentle. “Just let him go, Rosa. It’s not too late to make the right choice. The kid doesn’t deserve to be treated this way no matter what went between you and Jake.”

Rosa’s eyes flashed with anger as she turned towards him. Hatred spilled from them as her compassion waned. “You think I care about what he deserves? This is all Jake’s fault. Everything went wrong because of yo
