The message sat on my screen longer than it should have.
Another interrogation.
This time with a detective.
So they were escalating.
Good.
If they wanted to turn this into a criminal matter, I would meet them there.
I did not panic. I did not cry. I did not text anyone in distress. I simply locked my phone and placed it on the table.
Drake watched me carefully.
“What now?” he asked.
“The board,” I replied calmly. “They’ve brought in a detective.”
His jaw tightened, but I didn’t give him room to speak. I needed control, not panic.
“I’ll handle it,” I said.
Monday morning came quickly.
My arm throbbed the moment I woke up, but I ignored it. I changed the bandage carefully, biting back the sting as I cleaned the wound again. The bruise around it had darkened slightly, but the swelling had gone down.
No one was going to see it.
