“Hailey… are you okay?” I asked, hoping not to startle her as Declan let go of her hand.
“Sister,” she called out to me. She hadn’t called me that in years—it brought tears to my eyes.
“You’re just in the hospital…” I said as I noticed her eyes scanning the room as though searching for an escape route.
“The hospital? What happened?” she asked in a hoarse voice. I placed my hand on her shoulder, keeping her still.
“Ria… the doctor’s here,” Ashley said from the doorway as the doctor followed behind her.
“Give the patient some space, if you may,” the doctor said, walking toward her. I stepped back to give him room.
Declan stood away from her, his eyes wide with shock.
“What’s up with him?” Ashley whispered.
“I don’t really know, but I have a feeling she doesn’t remember him,” I whispered back.
After a short while, the doctor turned to us.
“Who is the family member of the patient?” he asked.
