People murmured amongst themselves, their voices sharp. Some spoke of the destruction, and others spoke of the thing Elijah had become. Their eyes kept flickering back to the road Elijah was expecting to come from, the anxiousness growing in their minds.
And soon enough, footsteps approached from a distance.
They were measured and slow, walking across the sandy floor toward the gathering. On the outside, he appeared way too calm for a man about to face the aftermath of the chaos and his expression was unreadable.
Every eye followed him as he approached. The warriors straightened up instinctively as he walked past them, falling into the rigid posture out of habit but they remained alert, as if he would suddenly transform and jump at them.
Some others refused to look at him at all. Some stared with spite, and others had hope in their eyes, still staring at him with the same adoration they’d always had.
