Yves stared at the blurred pattern on the ceiling while he played absentmindedly with Timothy’s hair on his lap. It was early in the dawn, but sleep still hadn’t come for him despite the prickling dryness of his eyes, the tick of the clock counting the time he spent thinking about the message on the paper.

Stay out of deep water — just what the fuck did it even mean? Drowning was a possible cause of death, but how were they supposed to stay out of deep water when they had to ride a ferry or a plane back to Manila? Was that a figure of speech, or did Sydth actually mean it in a literal sense?

Shifting on the bundle of pillows, Yves carefully placed Timothy’s head on his side of the bed so he could lie properly beside him. He cuddled up to the warm body and willed himself to fall asleep.

There was no point mulling about an obvious ploy to reel his curiosity towards the letter sender. Such an old-school trick. As if that was going to work on him.
