The quiet stillness of the room enveloped her as Ayleen leaned against the wall, her heart racing after the charged exchange moments ago. Murat was in the bathroom, his emotions guarded as always, but something deep within her urged her to follow. She couldn’t leave him alone in this state, not when he was so clearly drowning in his turmoil.
Taking a deep breath to steady her nerves, she pushed open the door.
Murat sat on the edge of the bathtub, stripped to his briefs, his prosthetic leg resting to the side. His posture was weary, his head lowered as his fingers traced his thigh absentmindedly over the amputated area where his knee once was. The sight tugged painfully at her heart, and she drew in a sharp breath, careful not to startle him.
Hanging her shawl on a nearby hook, she stepped closer, her soft footsteps catching his attention. His eyes flicked up to meet hers, guarded yet vulnerable.
