Ayleen’s head throbbed violently, as if someone was pounding on it with a hammer, the pain so intense that a weak groan slipped past her lips. Her body ached from lying on the cold, hard floor, and the sharp sting in her muscles made even the smallest movement excruciating.
She forced her eyes open, blinking rapidly as a harsh beam of light streamed through a tiny, dust-covered window high above her head. It was the only source of illumination in the dark, suffocating space. The room, if it could even be called that, was filthy, the air thick with the stench of damp concrete and something far worse… blood.
