“It’s okay, dearest, you can stay here for as long as you need to,” said Thallus.

“I do not see my governess, was she not able to escape the house?” inquired Matilda.

“Matilda, your governess kidnapped…”

“She did no such thing, she saved my life. If it were not for her I would be dead,” said Matilda.

“Well, she is in the dungeon and…”

“You must release her, you must release her at once,” demanded Matilda.

“I’m afraid I cannot do that,” said Thallus stroking his daughter’s silk hair.

“Why? She is not dead is she?” asked Matilda.

“Lord Christopher wants me to release her to him for…”

“You wouldn’t send her off to him, would you?” she asked, her hands trembling.

“What did he do to you?” asked Thallus quietly. Her reaction to Lord Christopher was still fresh in his memory.
