“She’s just a little girl, you have to let her go,” I insisted.

The look on Keenan’s face was bordering on the sinister and I could tell he was close to ending Matilda’s life. I understood his reason but Matilda was innocent in all of this. And as I had come to understand that she might not even be Lord Christopher’s child I had come to pity.

However, even if it turned out that the man was her father it would not change how I felt about her. I was a firm believer that children need not suffer for the sins of their parents.
