Kael’s POV

I blinked hard, staring at her face. I do not know what to say, but damn, those eyes, wide and shimmering with silent desperation, punched me hard in the gut.

I looked away, but the weight of it clung to me, weakening my defense as I found myself making an empty promise I knew I should never have made.

“I will,” I blurted. Immediately, those words left my lips, and my heart tightened as if I had just signed my life away.

Her body leaned into mine as her hand drew circles on my back.
