“What?!”
Gasps erupted from Gwen and the warriors behind me.
“Maeve’s been abducted,” I repeated slowly, my large hand closing around the small arrow in my palm until the tip dug into my flesh.
Its sharp pain seared my hand, but nothing compared to the agony tearing through my chest. It felt like a blade ripping through my ribs, shredding my heart into ruins.
My knees buckled, blood pooling on the earth as a fresh wave of terror hollowed me out. I groaned—the thought of Maeve’s blood mingled with that of any stranger twisted my insides, threatening to push me past the edge. I fought it back. The crescent moon would rise in less than three hours. If I lost control now, neither my pack nor my mate would survive the night. Yet the ache in my chest screamed to be released.
