I just shake my head because I don’t know what to say to that.

“Come on, Gabriela. You two make an amazing couple, but that doesn’t change the fact that you kicked him out of your life five years ago. Maybe he was afraid you’d do it again.”

“No,” I answer, vehement and certain. I meet her eyes. “No way. Nothing separates me from him.” Not even this, I think. It’s a bump, a fight. In the end we get over it. Or do we?

“And does he know that?” she asks.

“Of course.”

“Alright. Maybe he doesn’t want to tell you because there’s nothing to tell. Nick told me his lawyer hasn’t gotten a hearing date. It may not go ahead. Or maybe he was planning to tell you tomorrow or next week and you went in shotgun. I don’t know, Gabriela. But neither do you.”

“You think I shouldn’t be mad.”

“I didn’t say that. Be mad all you want. Just don’t be unfair.”

I think about what she’s just said. Have I been unfair?
