Chapter 71

“I like to think so,” I reply, making him chuckle. “What did you mean when you said you’d take her home?” I’ve finally realized what didn’t add up. “And Megan?”

“Megan isn’t her mother. She’s her legal guardian.”

“Oh.” I frown. “Then who is her mother?”

“Amelia,” he says, and everything falls into place.

“The script is right. She’s obsessed with you.”

Marcus finishes buttoning his shirt and sits on the bench beside me, holding my hand. He looks at our intertwined fingers as he speaks:

“I’m dating Carolyn, Amelia’s twin. We aren’t serious, but we have a good time. She’s easy to be with and I… I’m not looking for a commitment. You’re very recent, Gabriela. I just want a woman in my bed, someone to vent with.

“Amelia takes a fancy to me, even though I never like her. They’re identical twins, but that’s the only thing they have in common. She’s narcissistic and has a cruel, selfish side. One night she gets into my bed pretending to be her sister
