Chapter 41. The Lesser Evil

Lyle was smiling as I walked toward him.
“Look who changed his mind,” he said and stood up. He pulled a chair from the nearby table and placed it between his and the other woman’s, who only smiled at me.
I sat down and let out a relieved sigh.
“What happened back there?” he asked, placing his intertwined hands on the table.
“Don’t ask.”
How hard is it to ask for one quiet evening out here? I just want to enjoy this event and look at how it starts.
Lyle introduced me to the two people at the table. One was Hillary Berdin, a newly-passed lawyer from Bruner University who was now hunting for a law firm. The other man was a corporate lawyer who happened to know my dad, Jack Kinston.
After asking for his phone number, I didn’t talk to him again. You know, avoiding more condolences if I had to.
“Hey, look… I think it’s starting,” said Lyle, and the three of us looked at the stage.
