Chapter 29. The Moment Between Us

Amelia’s POV

Adrian didn’t answer right away at my offer to help him apply the ointment, but the way he slowly leaned closer made something flutter in my chest. I wasn’t sure what I expected to feel when I touched him, but when I reached over to apply the ointment, my fingers brushed against the tender skin of his mouth, and my breath caught in my throat.

My touch was light, almost reverent, as if afraid I would do something wrong. His lip was warm, and soft beneath my fingers, and I couldn’t help but notice how close he was. He was so close that I could smell his cologne, and feel the heat radiating off him.

As I moved to smooth the ointment over the cut, I couldn’t stop myself from speaking. “That was reckless, you know. You should stop doing things like that.” My voice was steady, but my hands trembled slightly, betraying my calm facade.

Adrian didn’t respond, at least not immediately. He just stared at me with those intense eyes,
