Amelia’s POV
I rode my bike to Kaylee’s house hours ago, telling myself that I’d just hang out for a little while, watch a movie, and then head home. But now, hours later, I was still curled up on the couch, pretending to watch the screen while my thoughts circled the same moment over and over again; Adrian kissing me.
Adrian walks away.
It didn’t make sense.
I wasn’t imagining the way he kissed me. It wasn’t hesitant or uncertain. He kissed me like he meant it, like he wanted me. Like what I felt wasn’t one-sided.
So why did he walk away?
The words he said, the way he apologized before leaving; didn’t make sense. If he cared about me, if he wanted me, why couldn’t he just stay? Why couldn’t he give up the race?
I pulled my knees up to my chest and hugged them, staring blankly ahead at whatever rom-com Kaylee had put on. I wasn’t paying attention. I hadn’t been for the past hour, not since she forced a bowl of popcor
