Chapter 136. After Midnight
Maggie POV
About Two Years Later.
“Quit wasting time,” Mrs. Oaktree says. “Get on with it,” she adds before turning to her husband. “I swear, we need a new batch of servants with the ones we have being so incompetent.”
I don’t stick around to hear their argument. “Yes, ma’am,” I answer, lowering my head and stepping out of the room.
My knuckles turn white from how hard I grip the cleaning supplies cart as I push it toward the next room. I have four more parlors to clean before I can go back to my room: dusting top to bottom, scrubbing floors, polishing anything that shines.
I’ve never complained about the work in the time I’ve been here... however long that has been. I don’t dare sneak a peek at the General’s calendar in his desk drawer for fear that someone will catch me in the act.
