Chapter 195. Roommates
Our carriage rode through the gates into the forecourt of a manor and came to a halt. I was asleep, exhausted from the journey. I wasn’t sure how many hours, days, or weeks it had taken us to get here—I’d lost count after the first two nights. My back was rested on the wall of the carriage, breathing subtly as Calliope’s eyes swept over my white dress, inspecting every crease, fold, and embroidery, possibly to make sure it was in perfect shape. Her back was rested on the opposite wall, and her arms were still around her knees.
She smiled, the faint glint of sadness in her eyes turning into a shimmer of hope for only a breath of a moment. I’m not sure why.
As I drew one more breath, the entire wall I sat against fell back.
My eyes snapped open, and I screamed as I tumbled backwards down the ramp wall toward the ground. My gown was thrown over my head and spread across the floor like an excessively large bedcover. My head hit the ground, and I let out a silent yelp,
