I waited for his answer, and as I waited, I did not even know I was holding my breath until the alpha replied, “Okay.”

“Okay?” Hope laced my tone. “Will you not follow through with the deal?” 

“Sure, I will call Darco before the day comes to an end.” He forced a smile, but I knew that he wasn’t happy. I could see the sadness lingering in his eyes. “I’m going to listen for once.” The last few words were more to himself than to me. 

I reached out to him and touched his shoulder. “You are not a disappointment. You never were and will never be, know that, okay?” 

He swallowed and then nodded. It was like he did not believe it but he wanted to try to act like he did. But what did I expect? He had failed his brother and had lost his parents. The only people who were left to raise him had criticized every single thing he had done, so yeah, I kind of got it.
