What's going on? Where is this coming from? I know we are on a break right now, but for a second, I had forgotten about that. This entire evening felt so familiar, so comfortable; I completely forgot it.

Fuck, no, that's never what I wanted. I never wanted her to want this. I just wanted her to focus on herself, not try to forget about what we had, what we have.

"What do you want me to do?" I ask, feeling helpless. I have no idea how I can give her the space she says she needs. I want to give her anything she needs, anything she wants.

"I need this to be real. I need you to accept that there is no break, it's over," she says, her voice quivering with emotion.

"You want to actually break up?"

"Yes," her voice wavers, but she doesn't back down.

I'm desperate, so I'll use any excuse I can find to keep her. "We're married, Chantel."

She
