Before dinner, I stopped by Sallie’s to see what she was doing, not with any particular agenda. I also had no intention of giving her any illusions that we would be a happy couple. It was cold, and I intended to remain that way until the end of my days. I had drunk a whole bottle of rum and could hardly walk.
“Why should I go to her place?” It was night, and I lacked any strategic sense. My feet didn’t stop; I walked freely without checking where I was going. I assumed it was because I was drunk. I didn’t even worry about what would happen if I entered her room without telling her first. She let out a scream when she saw me.
“You’re going to scare me to death,” she said, her hands on her cheeks. Her red hair was disheveled and loose.
“Aren’t you going to have dinner?” I asked, noticing that she was in her nightgown and dinner had not yet been served in the large dining room.
