Beneath my feet, the ground seemed to tremble, as if a premonition invaded the immensity of my body. My eyes pointed toward the darkness. This was normal for me; I had been moving around these streets at night since childhood, in these unsafe neighborhoods and beyond. My vigilance was constant and remained present because it had allowed me to survive for a long time. Jason was in a hurry and had broken a sweat.
“Do not panic; we’ll be fine this time,” I assured him with a hint of confidence. I wanted to make up for my mistake, wanted to be respected. I had earned the position as a scout; I had worked for it for a long time.
I believed in his word, even though we had long since grown apart. For me, the bond was still intact. Jason helped me when he should not, when it did not suit him at all. One bad week could not cover up what had happened, even if he thought he’d forgotten. Friendship was not like that for me; unconditionality had to be there if you wanted
